Although it is technically possible to place snapshots/linked clones in other datastores, it may not make sense to do this. Virtual disks with snapshots are used as a chain, where each chain link is in use. Placing one of the chain links on slower storage will slow down the whole VM (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180)
