Try attaching the USB Drive to a USB 2.0 Hub connected to the Host and then connect the USB Drive to the Virtual Machine. This is a known workaround for some USB 3.0 issues with Virtual Machines in which the Guest OS does not support USB 3 and or drivers are not available. This may not be an ideal workaround however if it works and it lets you do your testing then it serves the purpose!
