Sorry I wasn't quite clear. What I was thinking of was to edit the downloaded VM's .vmx file and use the Converter to convert the local VM back to the ESXi host with the proper disk controller (LSI Logic Parallel) and virtual disk type (Thick or Thin).
It may also work to edit the .vmx file on the ESXi host and run the Converter against the VM on the host. In this case however you need to reload (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1026043) the VM after editing the .vmx file or remove/add it from/to the inventory. As you can see in the log file, the Converter still sees sourceDisk = "[HP P2000 G3] blaptlsfra02/blaptlsfra02-000003.vmdk" which most likely causes the error message.
