vm time - changes even when vmtools option is unchecked?

I'm just wondering how this would happen:

vms running on a host that was esxi 4.1 - but the server ntp settings had not been configured.

Then vms were migrated off to other hosts, and the first host was upgraded - we then saw/noticed that the hosts time was a week in the past, and that ntp was not configured, so we fixed it.

However apparently one of the vms that had earlier been migrated off, got put back before the time was fixed - and then the VM changed it's time. Even though the vmtools option to sync vm time to esx host was NOT checked.

Color me a bit confused - how/why did this happen? It resulted in a rather expensive need to manually fix time stamps in a proprietary database.

OUCH
