In my environemnt i have esx4.1 we are planing to move to ESXi5.1
can some one help me with some best documents and how best we can approach this requirement.
my plan is install a ESXi5.1 Virtual center.
Move the vms from one of the esx 4.1 to other host in the same cluster and disconenct this ESX 4.1 server and install with ESXi5.1 and conenct to the new virtual center server and share the LUNs and unregister the vms from esx 4.1 VC and register them in ESXi5.1 VC and power ON.
Is this the correct approach? could you please share your thoughts.
->So here is how we upgraded on environment:
# Upgrade our 4.1 vcenter to 5
# Setup a single host in 5 (connected to same shared storage as esx 4.1)
# Apply host profile from 4.1 and check everything out (some minor changes)
# Create a new host profile from 5.1 host without any vm's
# Present new storage using vmfs 5 (to host running 5 only)
# Migrate a second host to 5
# Move Vm's to 2 host setup and new storage - upgrade vmware tools and hardware version as part of the move if you can take the downtime
# Rinse and repeat on vm's / hosts until all hosts are upgraded and all vm's are off 4.1
# Upgrade the vDS / migrate to vDS if your not using now
# Enjoy 5.1 by logging into the web client.
Thanks,
