Re: vSwitch Management Network drops connection after VLAN change

Since you're using the VLAN 10 as the native VLAN, do the following:

1) change the management port group VLAN to 10 (you will lose connectivity at that point to your ESXi)

2) change the native VLAN to default VLAN 1 (the connectivity to your ESXi host will be restored)

We've had four machines get the 10.12.3 update pushed from Apple starting around noon CST today. They are no longer able to run VMs on Fusion Pro 8.5.3 with the error message, "Unable to retrieve kernel symbols". Still trying to download the 1.16GB update to break my machine and provide more details. This thread was the closet I've found to the issue.

ESXI Restore Error

I followed the instructions on the following KB to backup & restore my ESXI FREE Edition server.

https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2042141

I am able to backup OK however when performing the restore, I receive the following error:

Restore Failed. A general system error occurred. Internal Error.

The original system is v6.0, and the new system is v6.5.

Am I receiving the error because (a) you cannot backup & restore between 2 different versions? (b) you cannot backup & restore ESXI FREE edition? (c) or something else?

Re: L2 Extension to NSX

Yes you can do that.

In that case, you do NOT configure any logical switch on NSX.

You simply plug the VMs on the vSphere VDS Port Group associated to that VLAN (nothing to do with NSX).

Then about:

. DFW:

You can still use DFW even for VMs plugged on VDS-VLAN_PortGroup.

. LB

You can still do it in one-arm mode (with the Edge-LB connected to the VDS-VLAN_ProtGroup

All good :-)

Thanks. It worked. ESXi was using NAT , I have changed similar to VCSA  (Bridged) ...

Trying anything like that would be a perfect excuse to deny support for any party you might pay for support-subscriptions.
If you really need to use Centos binaries pick them very carefully- prefer anything that has no dependancies and is statically linked (if that is the correct term)

I also recommend to not add the Centos-binary into the ESXi-directory tree but rather run them from /tmp and inject them only on demand.

Unfortunately I am not uptodate on the latest version - but I have done this myself withESXi 5.5 - I needed the binary "scalpel" running on ESXi itself.

A more popular success-example was the use of a Centos-sftp-service.I believe you should be able to still find instructions for that example in google.

Personally I stopped those "stunts" quite a while ago.

At work I do a lot of remote stuff on systems that I see for the first time - so I rather search for safe workarounds:
typically I start a small Linux-VM that gets access to the complete ESXi-file-tree via sshfs connections and use that VM to do those operations that ESXi is not eqipped for.

mouse pointer is offset up and to the left about 1/4 inch

i am on an imac running 10.11.6 running fusion 8.1.0 and i have a windows 7 VM.

the mouse pointer displayed in the VM is a bit off from the point it activates when pressed.

when i release the mouse the pointer jumps to the correct location but with i reactivate it

it again has the offset.

the image with the small mouse pointer is the OSX pointer, the correct position. the large

pointer is win7s. the jump is the issue and not due to movement of the mouse.

Screen Shot 2017-01-23 at 19.24.39.png

i have looked in the fusion discussions but could not find a reference to an issue like this.

what can i do so that the mouse activation point corresponds to when the mouse is pointing.

thank you,

jeff

Hot Clone VMDK and Attach to Another VM

Hi All-

I have been searching and not found anything quite what I am looking to do.  Want to basically clone multiple VMDKs, on a single VM (lets say D, E, F, drive, not the C drive or first VMDK), on different LSI logic controllers, and then attach them to another VM.  The source VM has to remain up, I saw some threads about a cold clone, however this source VM needs to remain online.  This would be scheduled and run once a week.  Thus overwriting the destination VMDK each time.  Is this feasible?  Any guidance would be appreciated.

vROps Community Members:

Blue Medora is currently developing new VMware vRealize Operations Management Packs for Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Aurora.  We plan to release these vROps MPs in late Q4/16.

If vROps integration with Amazon DynamoDB or Amazon Aurora is something that is relevant to you, Blue Medora's product management team is very interested in talking to you about what aspects of Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Auroroa integration you like to see surfaced in vROps, which specific features of Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Aurora your organization most commonly leverages, as well as any specific troubleshooting / diagnostic use cases you have around integration DynamoDB and Aurora-based metric, alert, capacity, and workload placement information into vROps.

This solution will complement the existing Blue Medora's other database/data-tier focused vRealize Operations Management Packs:

Please drop us a line at beta@bluemedora.com if you'd like to participate in a pre-release program for the vROps MP for DynamoDB and the MP for Amazon Aurora.

Re: NSX Load Balancer - Test Plan

Email notifications can be configured for NSX Load Balancer (and other Edge Services) through Loginsight (which is no cost for NSX).

http://www.virten.net/2016/05/integrate-vmware-nsx-in-vmware-log-insight/

https://pubs.vmware.com/log-insight-25/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.log-insight.administration.doc%2FGUID-D811931E-650F-4DFF-A97B-A383A36C29B2.html

Administrators can configure vRealize Log Insight to send email notifications when certain events occur in the system. The from address of system notification emails is configured by the administrator user on the SMTP configuration page of the Administration UI, in the Sender text box. See Configure the SMTP Server for vRealize Log Insight.

Administrator users can also configure Log Insight to send notification emails when the storage capacity drops below a defined threshold.

Every vRealize Log Insight user can create alert queries to receive email notifications from vRealize Log Insight when certain criteria are met.

Dashboards for monitoring Pool members status is also possible with VROPS.

Re: L2 Extension to NSX

If same can be achieved without bridgig, then this option may be preferred. Bridging is appropriate for P-V conversion and during the time that Physical and Virtual machines exist on the same IP subnet, but after the VMs are migrated to VXLAN and no other physical machines remain for this subnet bridging for this Vlan-Vxlan pair may be turned off. One use case may be if there is a site without NSX, and this site has some VMs (as hyperv, kvm  or cloud)  there a need to keep these  VMs on Vlan side, and using other L2 extension technologies for making these segments connected. Even for this scenario L2VPN edge can be installed as a standalone edge to provide this connectivity. If vSphere, I can't think of neccessity of keepeing the  some VMs for certain subnet on Vlan side, and some others on Vxlan side other than during migration.

If the default gateway is Physical L3 switch, for the Vxlan VMs as well as Vlan VMs and Physical Machines, the benefit of using Distributed Routing to increase throughpu is lost t,  as it decrease delay between VMs  and load on the Physical L3 switch.

Load Balancing to Vlan and vxlan VMs might be possible, but again best practice may be to keep VMs on Vxlan side

vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus query

Hello Everyone,

I have a cluster mixed with vSOM and vSphere Enterprise Plus Servers.

What are my options of using vRealize Operations?

Can I get reports and analysis from the hosts in the cluster which have vSOM license or do I have to upgrade all my licenses to vSOM

Re: ESXI Restore Error

You are recieveing this error coz of version difference.

the linked KB says as below.

When restoring configuration data, the build number of the host must match the build number of the host that created the backup file. Use the -f option (force) to override this requirement.

If this does not work and you have to restore the configuration from the backup, then install 6.0 and restore. you can always upgrade the host later.

Re: DLR Logical Switch route issue

1. Configure the default gateway on DLR with a value of 192.168.10.1.

2. Configure a static route on the Perimeter Gateway for 192.18.33.0/24 with a next-hop of 192.168.10.2.

3. Make sure that the Perimeter Gateway's FW if enabled is not blocking the traffic.

4. Use the traceflow from the NSX-Snap-in in vCenter to craft a packet. This will indicate whether or not it is being dropped due to FW policy.

I suspect points 1 and 2 will solve your problem.
